Looking forward to a great 2011 race season

My name is Rand Thompson and I wanted to re introduce myself as a columnist for the Midwest Racing News for 2011. Continuing from where I left off last season, I will once again be writing features covering my two favorite tracks; Flat Rock Speedway, and Toledo Speedway. Living just a handful of miles from MIS, I will also be including a little information about the big 2 mile oval in the Irish Hills. In addition, look forward this season to seeing some historical features about our sport’s past.

A little about myself; I first caught the “racing bug” in the mid 70’s as a teenager when my dad took me to my very first Indy 500, and needless to say, racing has played a big role in my life ever since. While I am first and foremost a fan, my love of the sport has allowed me the privilege to get involved on several other different levels. I am currently in charge of a volunteer group that performs pre race pit road and track tours on race weekends for MIS, and also serve as the PR Director for the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club. Besides writing for this website, I am a staffer for the great Dayton Speedway Lives! website that covers the history of this now closed legendary track.

My favorite racing series besides the weekly racing at Flat Rock and Toledo is the ARCA series and also open wheel cars on pavement. My favorite drivers (retired) are Joy Fair & Chuck Roumell (who I am proud to say are friends), Joe Ruttman, and Butch Miller. My favorite current drivers are Brad Keselowski, and Justin Allgaier. Besides going to the race tracks, I enjoy attending car shows with my restored 1973 Mercury Capri and spending time with my two dogs. In my non racing life, I work in the Lansing Mich. area as a Quality Engineer for a manufacturer of titanium forgings that are used for medical implants.

Looking forward to this upcoming season and see you at the races!
