Conley Picks up Back-to-Back Wins

August 1, 2015

In a collaborated effort with Muskingum County Speedway for their 33rd Annual Jim Dunn Memorial Race, Hilltop Speedway ran a regular non-points show on Friday providing drivers the opportunity to run the memorial race on Saturday. Although a regular race night, Muskingum County Speedway was offering provisional positions to the highest finisher at the Hill who does not make the Jim Dunn Memorial in late models, modified, street stocks and mini stocks.

The JPR Auto & Tire, Winning Edge and A&B Roofing and Construction mini wedges had an 11-car field. Winners of each heat race and making up the front row of the night’s feature event were Zoe Stafford and Brayden Renfrew.

Rounding four to the green, it was Zoe Stafford who would take an early lead with Braxton Wilson a close second. The two would battle it out, back and forth, until a caution would come out forcing Stafford to restart on the tail. Back under green, it was Wilson out front as the battle for position continued between Brayden Renfrew and Nick Large for second and Karyssa Beagle and Zoe Stafford for fourth. Nevertheless, picking up his sixth feature win in a row and fourteenth overall was “The Dominator” Braxton Wilson followed by Nick Large, Brayden Renfrew, Zoe Stafford and Karyssa Beagle.

Setting fast time among the 20 Holmes Tire late models was “The Flyin Ace” Corey Conley with a 15.097, who would also pick up the night’s dash win. Heat race winners were TJ Watson and Rick Conley.

Brining the field down the backstretch to the start of their 25-lap feature was Conley who would take the lead. After a rough start, racing was under way with Conley once again out front. A three way battle for second through fourth between Mike Basich, Rick Mardis, and Vic Hottinger would ensue with Mardis taking second. Basich would then work around Hottinger and back up to the bumper of Mardis. Caution would come out bunching the field up, back under way, Conley again took the lead as Mardis and Basich would battle second. However, a caution on a lap car, would force Mardis pit side. Once more, under green, it was “The Flyin Ace” after leading every lap of a caution filled feature picking up the win. With a late pass Hottinger would pick up second as Basich, TJ Watson and Kevin Davis rounded out the top five.

The Finish Line Auto Body modifieds had a 17-car field with “The Batman” Scott Peltz setting fast time with a 16.422. Heat race winners were Chris Basich and “Rockin” Robin Duston while “The Toboso Bullet” Jimmy Smith picked up the dash.

Setting the pace to the start of their 20-lap feature event was Smith who would jump out front over the rest of the field. With Smith out front, the battle would ensue between Peltz and Bruce Miller for second. Also, making some last lap passes, Nathon Loney would advance around Miller and Eric Singhaus to crack the top three. However, demonstrating the ability to defend the top spot it was “The Toboso Bullet” Jimmy Smith claiming another win for the season. Second went to Scott Peltz, third to Nathon Loney, fourth to Bruce Miller and fifth to Eric Singhaus.

Eleven cars made up the Holmes Pest Control street stock division with Brandon Gardner setting fast time with a 17.398. Picking up the heat race win was Mike Lonas while Dave Potts picked up the dash win.

On the front row of the night’s feature even was Potts and Bob Daugherty. With the green out, the two would battle side-by-side for the lead. However making a strong run on the bottom of the track to take the lead was John Wilson. Also making their way through the field was Mike Lonas and Kevin Potts who would challenge one another as Wilson pulled away. Unfortunately, problems would send Wilson to the pits, placing Lonas on point for the restart. Back under green, Lonas would remain out front adding another win to his season. Finishing second was Kevin Potts, third was David Potts, fourth was Brandon Gardner and finishing fifth was Bob Daugherty.

Up next were the Winning Edge Auto Body mini stocks with a 15-car field. Each of the two heat race wins would go to Jerry Adkins and Kevin Markey. With the field set, the green was out with Adkins taking the top spot as Casey Butler would work around Markey for second. However, troubles for Butler would bring out the caution as he would sit in the middle of turn one and two unable to continue. Back underway, it was Adkins to the lead as a three way battle between Markey, Chris Priebe and Colton St. John would ensue for second through fourth but unable to gain on the leader. Thus, after leading every lap it was Jerry Adkins who would add to his wins this season. Rounding out the top five was Chris Priebe, Colton St. John, Kevin Markey and Caleb Spencer.

The modlite division had a mere six car field with Tracy Fritter picking up the only heat race win. After an invert of the heat race finish, the feature was underway with Josh Crider on the pole. With the green out, Josh took the lead. However, it was short lived, as Nick Crider took over the top spot with Tracy Fritter a close second. After putting almost a half track between them and the rest of the field, it was Nick Crider picking up the win followed by Fritter. Third went to Ray Heskett, fourth to JB Barton and fifth went to Tanner McLoughlin.

Rolley Heyder would pick up the only heat race win in the field of seven Bugs-R-Gone trucks. Bringing the field to the start was Heyder, who would take the lead and that is where he would remain, leading every lap green to checkered adding to his exceptional season. Finishing top five was Travis Winterringer, Dwayne Powell, Tome Garlick and Jerry Gardner.
