Carpenter, The “Kamikaze Kid”, Crowned King of the Hill

July 3, 2015

After weeks of what seemed to be non-stop rain, racing action finally returned to Hilltop Speedway. The timing could not of been more perfect, as cars packed into the pits and fans in the stands to see who would be crowned King of the Hill and take home the $5,000 to win in the late model division.

Starting the night off was the Holmes Tire late models with a field of 39. After four qualifying groups, it was Rick Bond setting fast time overall with a 14.506. Heat race winners were Rick Bond, Steve Casebolt, Tim Dohm, and Devin Moran. Winners of two last chance races were “The General” George Lee and JR Gentry.

Bringing the field down the backstretch to the green was Tyler Carpenter with Devin Moran outside. Taking the lead was Carpenter with Moran doing what he could to overtake the top spot. As the two would come up on lap traffic, Moran would close the gap. However, a caution would come out with Moran being charged and deciding to go pit side rather than restart tail. With the field bunched back up for the restart, Tim Dohm was all over Carpenter’s bumper, ultimately passing him and taking the lead going into lap 18. While the battle for the lead continued, Corey Conley and Steve Casebolt would battle for third as Greg Oakes would work his way into the top five from a fifteenth starting position. As Dohm and Carpenter worked for position through lap traffic, unfortunate contact with a lap car would cause Dohm to spin bringing out the caution and forcing him to the pits unable to finish. With Dohm in the pits, Carpenter would take the top spot and bring the field back under green. While battle for position continued within the top five, it was the “Kamikaze Kid” Tyler Carpenter picking up the $5,000 win and being crowned King of the Hill. Rounding out the top five was Greg Oakes, Corey Conley, Steve Casebolt and Doug Drown.

With a field of 31, the Finish Line Auto Body modifieds were the next to roll onto the track. Setting fast time was Jimmy Smith with a time of 15.739. Picking up a heat race win each was Kevin Morehouse, Chris Basich, Anthony Kinkade and Jimmy Smith. The last chance race win went to Rory Reed.

With the field set after redraw, it was “Stormin” Norman Aronhalt on pole with “The Logger” Kevin Morehouse outside. Out front early was Aronhalt, while Morehouse and Jimmy Smith battled out second. Caution would come out sending Anthony Kinkade to the tail and bunching the field back up, allowing Morehouse to set his attention to Aronhalt. As the green came back out, Morehouse would take over the top spot while Smith worked Aronhalt for second. Using lap traffic to ensure his lead over Smith, it was “The Logger” Kevin Morehouse going on to pick up his 41st modified win. Second went to Jimmy Smith, third to “Fast” Freddie Carpenter, fourth, from the tail, Anthony Kinkade, and fifth to Norm Aronhalt.

The Holmes Pest Control street stocks had a field of 20 for the night. It was Brandon Gardner setting fast time for the division with a 16.830 as well as picking up one of the two heat race wins. The other heat win went to Dave Potts.

Potts, sitting pole, would bring the field to the green with Mike Lonas jumping out front early. However, on the bumper of Lonas, was Brandon Gardner who was determined to take over the top spot. The two would battle, side-by-side, Gardner would take the lead coming off of turn four as a flat tire would send Lonas to the pad. Able to change tires and make it for the restart, Lonas would have to restart on the tail. With the green back out, it was Gardner out front, while battle for positions would continue between John Wilson and Kevin Potts. Also working his way back through the field was Lonas, who would ultimately run out of laps; as Brandon Gardner would go on to pick up the win. Finishing second was John Wilson, third was Mike Lonas, fourth Kevin Potts and fifth Bob Daugherty.

Rounding out the night were the Winning Edge Auto Body mini stocks with a field of 22. Picking up the heat race wins were Michael Rose, James Priebe, and Terry Adkins.

Setting the pace to the green was James Priebe, who would take the lead followed by Jason St. John and Terry Adkins. As the three battled it out for the lead, they would go three wide a number of times during the race’s duration. Working through lap traffic Priebe would maintain the lead; however, Adkins was not far behind. A caution would allow the field to be bunched back up and provide Adkins the opportunity needed to take over the lead. Nevertheless, the battle continued for position, when contact coming off of four would cause Priebe to roll on the front stretch and freeze the field’s finish. Therefore, picking up the win was Terry Adkins followed by Jason St. John, James Priebe, Tyler Parsons and Jerry Adkins.
