JOHNSON CHASES DOWN SCHULTZ, WINS WIR SUPER LATE MODEL FEATURE

(Kaukauna, WI) – Defending track champion Casey Johnson led all but one lap in the super late model feature – but it was the one lap that counted the most.

The Edgerton ace chased down race leader Maxwell Schultz, passing him on the final circuit and capturing the 35 lap feature at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna Thursday.

For a time it appeared the win was all but sewn up for Schultz. The second-generation driver ducked underneath Sawyer Effertz for the lead on lap 20 and built up a sizeable lead over the rest of the field. Johnson sliced his way through the field up into second with nine laps to go and began tracking down Schultz. As the pair received starter Pat Barrett’s white flag Johnson pulled inside of Schultz, pulling ahead as the pair exited turn two. Schultz wound up with second place money, followed by Jesse Oudenhoven, Effertz and Jeff Van Oudenhoven.

Two Rivers’ Brett Wenzel won the time-shortened late model feature. The main event was called after six laps being completed due to too many cautions with wet weather pending. Chase Randerson, Reagan May, Eddie Muenster and Nathan Van Wychen placed second through fifth, respectively.

With the heat races scrapped in all of the quarter-mile divisions due to the lengthy rain delay – the Pavement Pounder sportmods ran their feature race with the lineup determined by the draw for their heat race. Neenah’s Kevin Bethke drew the number one pill the start on the pole position. The contest went green-to-checkers with Bethke winning by a sizeable margin. Bethke won the last Pavement Pounder race run in 2018. Trailing Bethke at the checkers were R.W. Aschenbrenner, who finished second with a tire going down, Dale Cayemberg, Sawyer Haese and two time Pavement Pounder winner Brock Saunders.

Former super stock champion Dylan Wenzel returned to action – winding up in victory lane. The Fremont driver also earned quick time honors earlier in the evening.

Appleton’s Kyle Quella emerged triumphant in the sport truck race with Neenah’s Larry Gintner capturing the Sizzlin’ 4 feature.

The Figure 8 main event was won by Craig Krueger.

Next Thursday night July 11 will see the White race being run – the 2nd leg of the 48th annual Red, White & Blue State Championships. A 60 lap super late model feature is on tap. Racing gets underway at 6:30 p.m. You can check frrc.us for more information or follow the club’s Facebook page.
