Phil Bozell Wins on an Emotional Night @ the Zoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – On a night when the entire Kalamazoo Speedway community was remembering two-time track champion Ben Raber, 2011 Outlaw Super Late Model champion Phil Bozell won an intense late race duel with Doug True to pick up the victory in the forty-three lap Outlaw Super Late Model feature. Craig Everage finished a solid third ahead of Rick Senneker and fast qualifier Todd Harrington. Notable finishers included defending track champion Mark Shook, who finished ninth. Harrington now leads the point standings by 20 points over Bozell, Shook (-40), True (-42) and 12-time champion Andy Bozell (-50).

The Late Model Sportsman division ran two features on Friday, with the first feature being a make-up feature from the season opener. AJ Foote picked up the victory in the make-up feature over six-time Late Model Sportsman champion Buddy Head. Josh Trammel finished third ahead of Lane Head and Phil Bozell. 2015 Outlaw FWD champion Keegan Dykstra finished sixth beating out Curtis Holt, Frank Stager, Jordan Hunderman and Louis Miller. Notable finishers included two-time Outlaw FWD champion Jerry Jansen, who finished 12th and fast qualifier Kenny Head, who dropped from the lead with a late race mechanical problem and finished 13th.

In the regular feature, John Long picked up his second win in just his second start of the season, holding off AJ Foote in the closing laps. Kenny Head finished third beating out Trammell and his brother, Buddy Head. Holt led the second half of the top ten over Dylan Stovall, Mike Williams, Phil Bozell and Hunderman. Notable finishers in the second feature included Jansen (12th) and Dykstra (16th). Foote now leads the standings over Kenny Head (-14), Buddy Head (-24), Dykstra (-123) and Lane Head (-127).

Fast qualifier Brandon Zachary started deep in the pack in the thirty-three lap Street Stock feature, but methodically worked his way to the front and held off Greg Brown on multiple late race restarts to pick up the victory. Rob Hardy finished third ahead of Barry Jenkins and Keith Wilfong. Defending champion Zack Cook led the second half of the top ten over Todd Hall, Andy Rutherford, Brad Hall and Doug Gallandt. Notable finishers included Shane Miller in 14th and Kyle Ribble in 17th. Brown now leads the points by just 14 markers over Wilfong with Cook (-27), Miller (-72) and Ribble (-118) rounding out the top five.

Ricky LaDuke picked up the checkered flag in the twenty-three lap Outlaw FWD feature. Pete Doxey, Doug Smith, Kyle Jansen and fast qualifier Jason Essex rounded out the top five. Jeremy Young finished sixth beating out Will Slaughter, 2015 Zoo Stock champion Brock Sweeter, Gabe Carr and Nick Layman. Essex now leads the points by 38 over LaDuke, with Layman (-82), Kyle Jansen (-114) and Doxey (-139) rounding out the top five.

The twenty-three lap Zoo Stock feature saw Logan Hiemstra emerge victorious over Buster Martin Jr., Bryan Sawyer, Curtis Towne and Riely Meade. Grant Lofquist finished sixth ahead of Jerry Ballard, CJ French, fast qualifier Taylor Imus and Nick Failing. Notable finishers included Colin Bozell, who entered the night with the point lead but finished a disappointing 15th. 2016 Outlaw FWD champion Dan Rigoni picked up the victory in the ‘B’ Feature. Towne now leads the points by 32 over Colin Bozell with Ballard (-82), Failing (-141) and Meade (-173) rounding out the top five.

This Friday, June 22 fans will be treated to “Howe Patio Plus Double Feature Night”. It will be the only night all season where all five classes will run double features. The Outlaw Super Late Models will run two-25 lap features each paying $550 to win and $150 to start. Also in action will be the Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks, Outlaw FWDs and Zoo Stocks.
