PATIENT ZEHR CAPTURES ROUND ONE OF NORWAY SPEEDWAY AUTO VALUE TRIPLE CROWN

(85-year-old Pete Zarnoth captures heat win in sport trucks)

(Norway, MI) June 8 – Menominee’s Dalton Zehr carefully picked his way through traffic and passed Mike D’Angelo for the lead on lap 20 and sifted through lapped traffic to win Round I of the Auto Value Triple Crown and at Norway Speedway Friday night.

Zehr started 11th on the grid and stayed patient. Marquette’s D’Angelo snatched the lead and appeared headed for a career win. But Zehr surgically picked off cars one-by-one and motored around D’Angelo for the lead with 30 laps remaining.

Zehr wound up taking home the $1,000 top prize. D’Angelo held on for second place money in his best performance of his career. Last week’s feature winner Tom Lindquist took third, followed by Robby Iverson and Kris Kelly. “It’s always tough to get a win here at Norway as there are a real tough bunch of competitors,” Zehr said in victory lane. “We’ll be back next week as I’ll be shaking a car down for Johnny Sauter’s appearance for the Stateline Challenge here on July 6.”

Norway’s Andy Gerwig brought the crowd to his feet with a last lap, metal-grinding super stock victory. Gerwig traded paint with visiting driver Scott Bolster who towed all the way from Sparta, Wisconsin to race after another track rained out.

Other feature winners for the evening included Spread Eagle’s Bobby Lewis in the sportsman, Tanner Fickel in the sport trucks and Jake Dolfurd in the 4 cylinders.

Earlier in the evening 85-year-old Pete Zarnoth of Brillion, Wisconsin brought the crowd to a standing ovation after he won a 10 lap sport truck heat race.

Next Friday night June 15 the track will host the Northern Michigan Triple Crown. The Super Stock Special will feature drives from Kinross and Sands Speedway in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  Racing gets underway at 6:45 p.m.
