Luftgekühlt 5 partner activations revealed

It’s not only the air-cooled Porsches that are individually selected by Luftgekühlt organizers – racing driver Patrick Long and designer Howie Idelson. The participating partners are also chosen specifically for what they can contribute to the event experience. Relevance to the vintage Porsche community, rather than strictly commercial interest, is the defining criteria for Luft’s partners and collaborators. So it’s with pleasure we can announce the partner lineup for Luftgekühlt 5, which takes place on Sunday, April 22, 2018, 9am-3pm at Ganahl Lumber Company South Bay in Torrance, CA.

PIRELLI

This will be the Italian tire manufacturer’s second year as a partner and will again highlight the Pirelli Collezione tire range in a two-part display.

The main focus will be on a Pirelli art installation inspired by the famous Pirelli CN36 tire, which was original equipment on many Porsche 911 models from 1969 onwards. The installation combines historic Pirelli artworks and new interpretations, displayed alongside classic Porsche models equipped with the rejuvenated tires from Pirelli Collezione.

Highlighted among the cars will be the 1993 Le Mans class-winning 964 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.8 RSR, which was driven to victory by Jürgen Barth, Joel Gouhier and Dominique Dupuy using Pirelli racing tires.

A secondary display will highlight Pirelli Collezione – a range of tires that was warmly welcomed by air-cooled owners at Luftgekühlt 4 because it solved a long-standing problem of finding suitable tires for the older cars.

Pirelli Collezione includes seven modern constructions of vintage tires such as the CA67, CN72, CN36, CN12, P7, P5 and P7 Corsa Classic to suit Porsches built from the 1950s onward. All are produced from the original molds to ensure a perfect fit for the older cars, while utilizing modern construction and tread technology to meet today’s safety and performance requirements.

PORSCHE CLASSIC

With approximately 70% of all Porsches ever produced still on the road, Porsche Classic provides an essential service. It ensures a supply of parts and technical support for all Porsche road vehicles that are ten years or more out of series production. So that’s everything from the 996 Porsche 911 back to the 356, 986, 914, the front-engined, transaxle cars, and Carrera GT. Those models represent more than 200,000 cars registered in the USA alone!

To date, Porsche Classic has 52,000 genuine parts in its inventory, with hundreds of previously discontinued parts brought back to market every year.

There are eight Porsche Classic Partners active in the US. These are Porsche dealerships around the country with a Porsche Classic support network that includes Classic-specific training and a shared passion for classic cars.

Additionally, Porsche Classic has factory restoration workshops in Freiberg, Germany and Atlanta, Georgia. These facilities work together to provide partial and full restorations for owners.

Porsche Classic will return to Luftgekühlt to communicate with enthusiasts and educate attendees about what it is doing to keep older cars on the road. Its display will include the collectible Originale catalog, with 500 examples of the second edition available for visitors, as well as a small lounge featuring furniture by Modernica, who are themselves previous Luftgekühlt collaborators and hosts of Luft 3.

PORSCHE CARS NORTH AMERICA
As a supporting partner since the inaugural Luftgekühlt in 2014, Porsche Cars North America is a natural choice for the event. PCNA will participate in Luftgekühlt as the run-up to its Sportscar Together Day, which will take place around the world on June 8-10 to celebrate its 70thAnniversary.

A crew from Porsche – including legendary brand ambassador and racer “Quick” Vic Elford – will be on hand throughout the Luftgekühlt weekend to contribute to and capture content from all the activities.

RM SOTHEBY’S

Returning for its third year, RM Sotheby’s is the world’s largest auction house for investment-quality cars. As such, it has been able to secure an incredibly rare 908K racecar for display at Luftgekühlt 5. Visitors will be able to view chassis 908-010 – K for “Kurzheck,” or “short-tail.” It is among the first works 908 chassis built, and this example raced at the 1968 Spa 1000km.

RM is scheduled to auction 908-010 at its signature event during Monterey Car Week, August 24-25, 2018. And in celebration of the Porsche 908K, Luftgekühlt has again collaborated with artist Carby Tuckwell to create unique artwork of the car. This will be available at Luft 5 as a limited edition, hand-screened poster, allowing visitors to own a unique piece of 908K memorabilia.

CHOPARD

For its first year at Luftgekühlt, Swiss watchmaker Chopard will showcase both a very special car and timepiece.

The automobile in question is a blue Porsche 550 Spyder, chassis number 550-0067. Previously owned by French grand prix and sportscar driver Jean Behra, it was raced in France during the 1950s and shown by Porsche at the 1955 Paris Auto Salon.

Other cars in the 550 Spyder production run competed successfully around the world, including events like the Mille Miglia, where it celebrated a class win in 1954. A 550 Spyder also finished third in the Buenos Aires 1000km with Behra sharing driving duties with Stirling Moss. The Chopard timepiece on display celebrates the 550 Spyder’s success and is from its Mille Miglia collection, one of a limited edition of 50 watches destined for customers in the United States.

HAGERTY

As a provider of classic car insurance and a specialist in vehicle valuation, Hagerty has partnered with Luftgekühlt for three years to highlight its services for air-cooled Porsche owners.

At Luftgekühlt 5, visitors will be delighted to discover Hagerty will be serving coffee to guests during the morning hours to provide a caffeine boost for showgoers keen to explore the entire Luftgekühlt 5 venue. Hagerty will also host members of its Drivers Club for early access into the venue.

ABOUT LUFTGEKÜHLT

In the Porsche vernacular, Luftgekühlt represents all the air-cooled cars in the manufacturer’s history, from the Pre-A 356 through the 993 model line, which ended in 1998.

The Luftgekühlt brand is the brainchild of two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and noted Southern California creative director Howie Idelson

A true Porsche happening, Luftgekühlt is an experiential car culture event centered around a tightly curated list of historically significant or interesting cars, both race and street. There Is no set formula for our events, but we’re excited by cool venues, fun people, and creative expression, so you can bet those elements will always be included. The team strives to develop wild ideas that celebrate the passion we have for all things air-cooled, including exciting collaborations with likeminded people and brands.
