As Gas City I-69 Speedway Prepares for May 7 Opener

GAS CITY, Ind., March 16 – Gas City I-69 Speedway announced today that its open “Test and Tune” practice session from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 will also serve as an informal “Media Day” for the press and participants.

The practice day is open to all classes of race cars.

Since the racers will just be testing their equipment and not competing, they’ll have more time for interviews between their on-track sessions than they do on typical race nights. Track promoter Jerry Gappens will also be available for interviews.

It’s also a perfect opportunity for TV stations to get video footage of the cars, and photographers to get shots of the cars’ new paint schemes as well.

Sprint car track champion Max Adams of Marion, Ind., who just won a race in his native California, is not sure if he’ll be at the practice day or not at this time. Modified track champion Derek Losh of Rensselaer, Ind., will not be there, but he certainly plans to be in attendance on opening night, May 7. Street stock champion Andy Bishop of Gas City and hornet champion James Headley of Marion plan to use the opportunity to make sure their equipment is in perfect shape for the season opener and to test new equipment they’ve added over the off season. A host of other competitors who will try to dethrone these champions in 2021 are also expected to make good use of the track time.

The atmosphere is sure to be more optimistic than it was at last year’s “Test and Tune” session, when the COVID-19 pandemic was just beginning. That story line alone should be good fodder for journalists’ stories.

Journalists are asked to RSVP by email to track PR rep Linda Mansfield at LKMRestart@gmail.com if possible. If that’s not possible they’re to come anyway. They will be required to sign a liability waiver in the track office before receiving their credentials.

Journalists looking for local angles in their specific markets can check out the driver roster posted under the “Media” tab on the track website at GasCityI69Speedway.com. This list identifies drivers by their places of residence. Mansfield can provide contact information, car info and some bio material to reporters for all the drivers listed in black type. The list is updated throughout the season as more drivers submit their information forms. The 2021 info form will be available on the website this week for drivers to download and fill out.

Admission to the grandstands will be free for fans for the “Test and Tune,” although there won’t be an announcer calling the action. The concession stand in the pits will be open. A pit pass will cost $30.

The rain date for the “Test and Tune” day is the following afternoon from 1-5 p.m.

The 2021 season will kick off on Friday night, May 7, with a full program of non-wing sprint cars, USAC Midget Cup series (open midgets plus SpeeD2), modifieds, street stocks and hornets. On opening night the pit gate will open at 3 p.m. and the grandstands at 5 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and the races start at 7:30 p.m. An adult general admission ticket is a very reasonable $15, while children 12 and under are free to keep costs down for families. A pit pass costs $30.

Gas City I-69 Speedway is located on State Road 22, approximately a half-mile west of Interstate 69, exit 259. The quarter-mile dirt oval is about halfway between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, and attracts drivers and fans from all over the Midwest.
