The Wayne County Speedway awards banquet closed the books on the 2019 season by awarding the four track champions along with the top 10 drivers in each division. Following the meal at the Pines Golf Course Banquet room, 40 drivers were honored for their season long accomplishments. In the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprints, Dean Jacobs collected his 1st WCS championship since 1992 by winning 4 features and posting nine top 10’s as he accumulated 563 points and gave the McClure Motorsports team their second straight championship. For the second year in a row, Danny Mumaw would finish second in the points with 2 wins and seven top 10’s for 488 points. Trey Jacobs would finish third for the second year in a row as scored his first win and six top 10’s with 487 points. Clay Riney finished fourth as he drove to four top 10 finishes to collect his highest finishing place in five seasons with 437 markers. Henry Malcuit would fill out the top five with 415 points with four top 10 results. Tyler Dunn was sixth with 373 points while seventh place went to Andrew Palker chalking up 348 points. Dylan Kingan and Ray Miller each made it in the top ten for the 1st time as they tied for 8th with 321 points each. For the second year in a row, Troy Kingan finished tenth totaling 296 points.
Doug Drown reeled in his 4th Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model crown as he posted seven wins and three second places in the 10 points races to gather in 628 points for the title. Drown won the champioships in 2005, 2015 and 2017. He also won his third Attica Raceway Park/Wayne County Speedway Series championship. Ryan Markham’s one win and ten top 10’s would secure second place for the 6 time champion with 550 points. One win and nine top 10’s for 503 points would give J R Gentry third place for the second year in a row. Five time champion Brad Malcuit raced to six top 10 finishes and 453 points to end up fourth in the standings. Larry Bellman rounded out the top five with four top 10’s and 418 markers. Making the top 10 for the 8th year in a row, Charlie Duncan finished 6th with one win and five top 10’s for 407 points. Jerry Aber totaled 382 points on four top 10’s to finish seventh and a fifth straight top five. Brett Bee matched his car number and took eighth place with four top 10’s and 361 markers. Capturing his first top 10, Tom Denzinger collected 352 points with three top 10’s. Craig Hartong made the top ten with 307 points with two top 10’s.
Posting 8 wins and eleven top tens, Doug Drown secured 571 points to win his first McKenzie Concrete Super Stock crown and third in a row for Bob Daugherty Racing. Gary Hensel Jr. would finish second with 3 wins and eleven top 10’s and 560 points and his 4th straight top ten in points. Taking third place was John Wilson as he collected 513 points with one win and ten top 10’s for his 1st trip into the top ten points finish. Brandon Craver, the 2012 track champ, had ten top 10’s and 507 points for fourth. For the 2nd year in a row in the top 10, Don Rutt made it to fifth with nine top 10’s and 473 points. Rutt won his 1st ever feature in a non points race on Labor Day. The bottom five of the top 10 in points all made it in for the 1st time as Justin Lorentz took sixth with eight top 10’s for 440 points. James Alleman had 437 points with seven top 10’s for 7th. Curt Zimmerman had not raced in 18 years but came back to finish 8th with six top 10’s and 428 points. Scoring 416 points with five top 10’s for ninth place was Nick Humphrey. Coty Conway totaled up 411 points and four top 10’s, which all came in the last half of the season, was tenth.
Three wins and ten top 10’s for 580 points was enough for Brad Hensel to collect his third JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stock Championship. Brad’s other championship years were in 2014 and 2016. Wyatt Zimmerman posted two wins and ten top 10’s and 553 points for second and 1st top ten in points. 2015 track champion Doug Hensel was third with 539 points with a win and ten top 10’s. Wes Staley made it into 4th with 3 wins and nine top 10’s for 523 markers. Last years track champ dropped to fifth this season as Jordan James picked up one win and seven top 10’s for 462 points. Wayne Newbury’s one win and eight top 10’s gave him 461 points for sixth. Posting one win and five top 10’s and 446 points, Cory Staley, the 2017 champ finished 7th this season. Taking 8th was Brent Boreman who has seven top 10’s and 412 points. Jolene Voshel scored six top 10 finishes for 408 points and also won her 1st heat race and a last chance race in her career in the Mini Stocks. Tying for tenth was Tyler Wiles and David Keagy with 357 points each as Wiles had five top 10’s and Keagy had four top 10’s.
Winning the Stake’s Shortstop Super Stock Summer Series was Gary Hensel Jr. with Doug Drown second and Brandon Craver third.
Brad Hensel won the NewFast Motorsports Mini Stock Summer Series as Doug Hensel was second and Wyatt Zimmerman took third.
Other special awards were handed out and the first one was the Chuck Griffith Accomplishment Award that was presented to by Chuck’s wife, Carol and awarded to Bob Daugherty.
Contingency Connection’s Racer’s Rewards were hand out to Doug Drown with the Elgin Power Package and the Holley Brands Grassroots Champions Bonus. The K & N Superior Performance Bonus was given to Dean Jacobs. The Richmond Gear award was presented to John Wilson while the JE Pistons Sportsman of the Year went to Bob Daugherty.
The 2020 Wayne County Speedway opener is set for April 11th with the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association Sprints, the Super Late Models, Super Stocks and Mini Stocks.
