Tony Stewart Racing clinches ninth WoO owner title since 2001

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (November 2, 2018) – For the tenth time in his career, now with five in consecutive fashion, Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz is a World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion, making his 2018 title official on Thursday evening during World Finals qualifications at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Schatz, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Textron Off Road/Ford Performance/Curb Records/Sage Fruit/ No. 15 sprint car, entered the season-ending World Finals program with a 278-point command, padded by 21 victories in 2018, as well as an astonishing 64 top-ten finishes in 69 World of Outlaws starts thus far. In fact, 2018 marks as the sixth consecutive season that Schatz reached the 20-win milestone.

Schatz’ 2018 title bumps his total to eight under Tony Stewart Racing (TSR), all after accumulating back-to-back triumphs for Donny Schatz Motorsports (DSM) in 2006 & 2007. The transition from DSM to TSR in 2008 proved to be a successful decision for Schatz, actually kicking off his TSR tenure with a title later that season.

“It’s an honor to be a part of this organization. I get to work with the best team in sprint car racing and it shows night in and night out. I’m just the guy who gets to drive the car,” Donny Schatz said. “Our goal is to win races, but when you race a schedule like we do, you have to take a step back and look at the big picture. My team puts me in a position to win every night, and if not, we have the ability to battle forward and race near the front. The results that we put together allow us to contend for a championship. It’s a real privilege.”

Including the eight captured by Schatz, Tony Stewart Racing now owns nine World of Outlaws team titles. The first of the nine was accomplished in 2001 by Dover, Missouri’s Danny Lasoski. Schatz’ titles for TSR were earned in 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2014-2018.

“It’s pretty cool to see what Donny has accomplished over the last decade; I’m glad he has allowed TSR to be a part of his Hall of Fame career,” said Tony Stewart, owner of Tony Stewart Racing. “Steve (Kinser) will always be the King with his longevity and 20 Outlaw titles in the sport, but Donny is certainly proving to the best of his generation and down the road, arguments will be made who is the best of all time. For now, we’re going to celebrate this weekend. Congrats to Donny and the 15 team: Ricky, Scuba, Brad and Gary.”

Donny Schatz’ 2018 championship adds depth to an extensive team resume that now includes a grand total of 27 titles across multiple divisions of short track auto racing. On top of nine World of Outlaws championships, Tony Stewart’s ownership resume is also comprised of 14 USAC championships, as well as four TQ titles with Ron Combs.

Schatz and Tony Stewart Racing will conclude their 2018 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship campaign, officially, with two, full nights of World Finals competition on Friday and Saturday, November 2 & 3. The World of Outlaws championship celebration will take shape on Sunday, November 4.
