The first night of the Fast Four racing program at NAPA Jani Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway would see Wooster’s Danny Mumaw take the lead on lap 6 of the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprint feature and get to the finish line first for his win while Cody Scott of Ontario fended off several challenges to post his first win ever at WCS in the Kar Connection Super Late Model feature while Mansfield’s Bob Daugherty would do the same in the CorBon Super Stock main event and Brad Hensel of Smithville quickly grabbed the lead from his third starting position to grab the checkers in the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock feature.
Trey Jacobs would set the pace for the opening five laps of the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery sprint feature that were interrupted on the first two laps by a caution flag and a red flag which was caused by a flip of Jeremy Duposki on the second circuit. Mumaw, in his ABR Farms, Finishline Auto Body and Coblentz Trucking #16 moved into second on lap 3 and took the lead coming out of turn four on the high side on lap 6. From that point on, Mumaw was uncatchable with Jacobs cruising along in second. Behind them was some intense racing as Ryan Broughton, Brad Haudenschild, Clay Riney, Mitch Harble and Jordan Ryan were all bunched together and the running order of them changing on every lap. The racing got to close with three laps to go as Riney tapped the back of Harble’s car that turned him sideways to bring out the final caution. Harble would retire as Riney continued but out of top five contention. On the final restart, Mumaw would pull away from Jacobs for the win as Jacobs scored his best finish ever with second place as Broughton would hold off Haudenschild for third and Ryan would finish out the top five. Broughton, Jacobs and Mumaw were the heat winners.
In a loaded field of the Kar Connection Super Late Model feature, Cody Scott popped into the lead from his outside front row position as pole sitter J R Gentry taking second place. Scott and his Fultz Fabrication, CLR Truck Repair and Tru Form Race Product #19 would hold off Gentry in the early stages of the race but Gentry was being pressured by Corey Conley with Craig Wolford, Michael Maresca, Tyler Carpenter and Ryan Markham in hot pursuit. Carpenter would spin in turn four on lap 6 and three laps later a multi car pile up in turn one caused the red flag to wave as the track was blocked. As the action went back to green, Conley would power past Gentry for second and put the pressure on Scott and for several laps could get his nose along side Scott in turns one and two but Scott had the momentum of the higher groove to pull away each time. With five laps to go, Carpenter had pulled back into the top five behind Wolford and Maresca and in front of Markham. On lap 22, running third, Wolford’s ride caught on fire bringing out the red flag and ending his night. As the green flag reappeared, Scott held off Conley for the lead and Maresca bounced off the guardrail in turn two that allowed Carpenter and Markham to slip past. Going down the back stretch on the final lap, Markham charged hard to the low side of Carpenter and outraced him to the line for third place behind Scott and Conley. Maresca was able to hang on to fifth in front of Gentry. Heat winners were Gentry, Conley and Wolford as Markham claimed the Accu-Force Hard Charger Award in the feature as he started 9th.
It seemed like last season never ended for the CorBon Super Stocks as defending track Champion Bob Daugherty would start on the pole and grab the lead and hold off Matt Shroyer for the first 10 laps of the feature and much like the Sprint and Super Late Model feature, it was a dogfight to fill out the top five. Jordan James, T.A. Perrine, Paul Holmes and Gary Hensel Jr. were in the mix of contenders for those spots. Holmes would pick his way through the other drivers and with five laps to go, displaced Shroyer in second place and following a caution with three laps to go, Daugherty and his Char’s Cars, McKenzie Concrete and K & A Tree Service #21d would hold off Holme’s final charge. Shroyer would take home third place as Perrine edged out James for fourth. Brandon Craver, Holmes and Daugherty topped the heat races.
Brad Hensel wasted no time as he quickly moved into the lead from his inside second row starting position and grabbed the lead going down the back stretch on the opening lap of the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock feature and never looked back aboard the Joy Ride Transport, D J Directional Services and NewFast Motorsports #28. Doug Hensel would move into second at the halfway mark with last years Champion Cory Staley, Jordan James, Wes Staley and Billy Parsons dueling and flip flopping positions lap after lap and finishing in that order. Heat race checkers went to Parsons, Brad Hensel, Cory and Wes Staley along with Matt Miller. The two last chance races were claimed by Michael Stewart and Dale Beckett.
Next weeks action will be another Fast Four Racing Program with the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association (OVSCA) joining in with a $3,000 to win feature as the Kar Connection Super Late Models, CorBon Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks in race mode
