Luftgekühlt 5 – the air-cooled experience

There are just a few days left before the gates open on Luftgekühlt 5. The air-cooled Porsche event takes place on Sunday, April 22, 2018, 9am-3pm at Ganahl Lumber Company South Bay in Torrance, CA. And the show organizers – racing driver Patrick Long and designer Howie Idelson – have been working hard to create an unforgettable experience.

It all starts with the venue, which changes every year to create a unique ambience for each event. As previously announced, the Ganahl Lumber Company location will not only provide a stunning contrast to the Porsches on display, it also draws a fascinating link to the original Porsche 356 production run built at the sawmill in Gmünd, Austria.

We recently announced the line of posters that would be available at Luftgekühlt 5. These feature artwork by Brian Kesling depicting both a 964 Porsche 911 RSR and a 1980s-inspired take on the fan-favorite Luftauto 002. Carby Tuckwell has created artwork featuring the Porsche 908K prototype racecar. The good news is that the 911 RSR, Luftauto 002 and 908K are among the cars on display at Luftgekühlt 5, and the organizers, following tradition, are cementing the legacy of these cars through art.

The aforementioned 964 RSR contributes to the Luftgekühlt celebration of both the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the 964, and the 25th anniversary of Porsche’s official return to GT racing. Visitors will be able to view the 1993 Le Mans class-winning Larbre entry driven by Jürgen Barth, Joel Gouhier and Dominique Dupuy. Fans will also be able to take one home, with the car immortalized on the Luftgekühlt 5 official poster, which will be on sale at the event and online.

Besides its legendary status, the Porsche 908K on display is one of the cars Vic Elford drove. And we’re delighted to announce “Quick” Vic will be at Luftgekühlt 5 to meet fans and interact again with his legendary car.

This is just two of the many amazing Porsches you’ll find at Luftgekühlt 5, and we can promise there are many more rarities and landmark cars within the show. We encourage you to visit luftgekuhlt.com/storylines5 to read the background story on many of the star exhibits.

ART

Visitors to Luftgekühlt 5 will be able to enjoy a great deal of artwork, including the five posters and featured apparel, which will be available from the event merchandising locations and several sponsors booths. There will also be a Pirelli art installation, including period Pirelli promotional artwork to complement the 964 model celebration, as well as newly commissioned art celebrating classis Pirelli products.

A second art installation will be produced by artist Nicolai Sclater, known by the moniker “Ornamental Conifer” (instagram.com/ornamentalconifer). It is a new piece commissioned for Luftgekühlt 5 and will explore historic and iconic colors unique to the Porsche marque. This will be a live installation that unfolds throughout the day as it reaches completion.

CATERING

Luftgekühlt 5 will feature a variety of professionally-prepared, reasonably-priced catering optionsappropriate to Los Angeles, offering an interest mix of traditional, fusion and vegetarian options to ensure nobody goes hungry.

MERCHANDISE

Luftgekühlt merchandise has reached cult status and this fifth event will be no different. There will be a line of artwork-based apparel, which highlights some of the featured cars at the show. There will also be more items from the exclusive Luft x Malle London collaboration of luggage and accessories aimed at the air-cooled owner.

And don’t forget the 3kg ‘LUFTBOOK’ tome – a 260-page collection of photographs from Luftgekühlt events by many well known contributors.

Finally, Porsche Classic will be distributing copies of its quarterly Originale collectible vintage parts catalog to visitors to its lounge within the show.

PARKING

Parking on-site within the Luftgekühlt 5 venue is strictly limited to pre-registered air-cooled display cars. All owners have been notified and appropriate passes delivered. General admission attendees are directed to park at a paved and secured off-site lot, located at 2200 W. Toyota Way, Torrance, CA. Please review the attached map for details.

The organizers have provided air-conditioned, frequently-run shuttle buses to transport guests between the parking area and the main gate of the venue. The off-site lot will have a coffee cart for guests’ caffeination needs.

Please note, there is no pedestrian access to the facility. The surrounding area is an industrial zone devoid of sidewalks and the Torrance Police Department will be enforcing it.

The organizers strongly encourage visitors to consider carpooling and ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft to access Luft 5. There is a designated ride-sharing drop-off point outside the Ganahl Lumber Company main gate.

There Is no set formula for our events, but we’re excited by cool venues, fun people, and creative expression, so you can bet those elements will always be included. The team strives to develop wild ideas that celebrate the passion we have for all things air-cooled, including exciting collaborations with likeminded people and brands.
