Three winning streaks continued during Ohio Valley Speedway’s tenth race program of the season as “summer weather” finally found its way to the area.  The fifth annual Faster Pastor race was the spotlight event, and its success continued.

The Mineral Wells Tire WRA Mini-wedge feature went off first.  Hunter Krivesti recorded his first heat-race win; he and Nathan Drake paced the field to the green.  Krivesti and Lucas Crooks ran 1-2 for the first three laps before Drake asserted himself.  Drake got inside both front-runners to take the lead, and went on to his ninth win in ten races at OVS this season.  Krivesti, Crooks, Coleman Evans, and Easton Wilson finished behind the winner.

Because several of the FWD 4-cylinder owners were permitting the use of their cars for the “Faster Pastors”, their feature was run earlier than usual.  The “usual” part came in the form of Chris Lauer, who again led the distance for his ninth win.  Rusty Blosser ran second the entire race, followed by Jeff Rankin, Steve Brown, and Dave Rhodes.  For Blosser, Brown, and Rhodes, it was their best finish of the year.  Lauer was fast qualifier; he and Josh Ayers won the heats.

The fifth-annual Faster Pastor race was held before the remaining features.  Eight area ministers participated, with all earning funds for his respective church.  The Reverend Lester Morgan took the lead on lap five and pulled away from Reverend Larry Dale to take this year’s win.  Speedway officials thank all the participating ministers, the 4-cylinder car owners for providing their race cars, and Evans Construction for providing trophies and new fire suits for all the ministers.

A full field of 18 Kryptonite Race Cars AMRA Late Models took the green for the class’s 25-lap main.  Harold Redman Jr. jumped out to the lead and extended his lead until encountering lapped traffic 8 laps in.  Chris Garnes kept close to Redman during that time, and nearly took the lead twice while working the lapped cars.  The racing behind the leaders was competitive as well, with Andy Bond, Steve Lucas, Ed Shuman, and Dan Morrison exchanging positions in an effort to stay close to the two leaders.  Redman’s run ended abruptly on lap 19 with a blown left rear tire.  Garnes inherited the lead and held on for his third consecutive LM win.  Lucas would get away from the group and close in on Garnes but ran out of laps.  Jeff Burdette’s first run of the year resulted in a 3rd-place finish (from 10th); Bond and Morrison rounded out the top 5 finishers.  Redman was fast qualifier; he, Garnes, and Bond won the heats.

The AMRA Modifieds saw a new winner take the checkers, as D. J. Cline won an early duel with Tyler Evans and Nick Corbitt for his first OVS win in many seasons.  The feature was marred by a first-lap rollover by fast-qualifier Levi Woods; thankfully Woods came out unscathed.  Cline took three laps to wrest the lead from the 15-year-old Evans, and he led the distance.  Nick Corbitt came out of a duel with both Evanses to pursue Cline to no avail.  Corbitt, Robbie Evans, T. Evans, and Brandon Patton took the rest of the top-five spots.  Woods was fast qualifier; he, T. Evans, and Cline won the heats, with Robin Lashley victorious in the consi.  Following the first-lap mishap, the feature went off non-stop in less than 7 minutes.

Scott Rooks took the Pure Stock Class lead by earning his 4th win of the season, leading the last three laps.  Two 17-year-old drivers, Matt Maloney and Brandon Francis, took the prelims and set the pace for the main.   Maloney took the early lead, with Francis, Glen Underwood, Rooks, and Aaron Ellis in behind.  Francis’ bobble off turn 4 dropped him to 6th; Maloney continued to lead through two caution periods, while Rooks got by Underwood for second.   Rooks used a lapped car to take the lead on lap 7; two laps later Maloney’s run ended when his car hit the cushion which knocked off the coil wire.  Ellis won the battle for second at the finish over Underwood, Duane Stiers, and Francis.

The 8th Annual Late Model Special is scheduled for Saturday July 5, with the OVSCA Sprints returning on July 12.
