JON RANEY BIRTHDAY BASH SATURDAY AT BAER FIELD SPEEDWAY

Even after giving Constantine, Michigan’s Jeff Ganus $10,000 a week ago as the winner of the Super Late Model “Kenny Wallace 100”, Baer Field Speedway promoter Jon Raney still feels in a giving mood. So, this Saturday, he will celebrate his 50th birthday with a special five-division “Super Show”, highlighted by 50-lap, $1,000 to-win Features for both the ARBodies Late Models and the Modifieds; plus special 30-lap Features for the Street Stocks, Afdent Dental Mini Stocks, and Front Wheel Drives; and one lucky spectator will leave with a brand-new Xbox One game system!

Delayed three days by rain, 19 of the best Super Late Models in the Midwest were on hand last Saturday to challenge the historic Baer Field Speedway half-mile. Qualifying saw Michigan’s Steve Needles take the top spot in the Bobby Blount-owned Chevrolet followed by Terry Senneker Jr., Brian Ross, Jack Landis, and John Long.

A ten-car inversion draw saw Speedway “Hall of Fame” member Larry Zent start from the pole alongside Jimmy Carter. At the green, Carter quickly jumped around the polesitter into the lead while Ganus faded from third to fifth. As the field strung out, Carter continued to lead while Zent was all over his rear bumper. Zent’s hopes for the win went away in a cloud of tire smoke on lap 22 as he spun coming off of turn two for what would be the only caution of the race.

Back under green, Ganus began to work the outside, sweeping around Hantz for second and several laps later, staying on the high-side to blow by Carter and into the lead. From there, it was largely smooth sailing as Ganus built a straightaway lead and fist-pumped his way across the line for one of the richest wins of his career. Hantz settled for second followed by Needles, Carter, Ross, J.R. Roahrig, Eric Lee, Todd Currier, Jack Landis, and Terry Fisher Jr.

The Modified 50-lap Feature saw the continued dominance of the Coe Motorsports team as point-leader Scott Coe led teammate Terry Fisher Jr. across the line for his third win of the season and the sixth-consecutive 1-2 finish for the team. Pete Wormcastle was a season-best third followed by Jeremy Wallen, and Matt Dimit. Early leader Brent Martin was sixth with Mike Mayes, Bud Adams, Don Skaggs, and Johnathon Gatton rounding out the top-10.

As we get set to close out the second month of the 2014 season, here is how the chase for the $10,000 Baer Speedway points fund shapes up. Two-time winner and former Champion Tommy Cook continues to lead the ARBodies Late Model points, but sees his margin cut to just 8 points over Josh Timmerman with Justin King, Dean Cook, and Jesse Opliger completing the top-five. In the Modifieds, the question is can anyone stop the Coe Motorsports dominance? Teammates Scott Coe and Terry Fisher Jr. have finished first and second in each of the six races, with both drivers winning three times, but it’s Coe leading by 28 points over Fisher with Jeremy Wallen third ahead of Johnathon Gatton and Michael Mayes. The Street Stocks see several surprises as Tim Miller continues as the leader over feature-winners Brian Janes, John Shuler, rookie Jack Beeman, and Tyler Clark. Feature winner Brad McBride sits atop the Afdent Dental Mini Stocks over Kevin Howard, Kevin Dibble, Tim Howard, and rookie Jacob Bradley. The Front Wheel Drives see Shawn Poffenberger in the top spot followed by Bobby Comer, R.J. Weick, Kenny Spillers Jr., and Mike Kuehner rounding out the top-five.
