Solid Debut for Long and ML Motorsports at Daytona

Johanna Long and the No. 70 ML Motorsports team kicked off the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide series (NNS) season with a strong showing at Daytona International Speedway. After being collected in a late-race incident, the young driver was able to return to the track in order to salvage an impressive 21st-place position in her NNS debut.

The ML Motorsports team was in full force early Thursday morning for NNS practice. Long adapted quickly to the 2.5-mile track during the first round of practice and was comfortable with the handle of her No. 70 Foretravel Motor Coach/Biomet Chevrolet as she posted a fast lap of 30.34 seconds. The 19-year-old had just one start at Daytona prior to her NNS debut, so she spent the final practice session learning to draft while soaking in as much knowledge as she could from her spotter and driver coach, David Green.

After laying down a fast time of 49.83 seconds and a fast speed of 181.51mph, Long started the Drive4COPD 300 race on Saturday from the 21st position. She dropped back during the first half of the race while struggling to find a drafting partner. Riding in the 35th position on Lap 38, Long radioed her Crew Chief and spotter reporting that the car felt great, she just needed a partner to draft with.  Long went one lap down on lap 45, riding in the 38th position while waiting patiently for a drafting partner.

Caution waved on Lap 59, and Johanna received the lucky dog putting her back on the lead lap and into the 36th position. After coming down pit road for two right side tires and fuel, she was back on the track restarting on the lead lap. At lap 91, Long turned heads as she made her way up to 16th while continuing to pick off cars one at a time. By lap 93, she was sitting as high as 12th.

With 15 laps remaining, Long was caught up in a wreck with nowhere to go; however, that didn’t stop her or the team from continuing their strong day. The ML Motorsports team repaired the right side damage of the car as best as they could, and she was sent back out onto the track to finish the race. Staying cool, calm and collected, the young driver was able to battle her way back to secure a solid 21st-place position.

Johanna Long and the No. 70 ML Motorsports team will take one week off and will be back in action on Saturday, March 10 for the Sam’s Town 300. Live Coverage of the NASCAR Nationwide Series event will be aired on ESPN2 at 5:00 pm EDT.

“I’m really pleased with our team’s performance as a whole. It’s unfortunate that we got caught up in the wreck with nowhere to go, but I’m glad I was able to finish it out. I learned a lot and gained a tremendous amount of experience.  It was just all about having friends out there and someone to draft with you. At the end of the race, I felt like I earned their respect and a lot of guys would work with me in the draft. All in all, I felt like it was a good day for everyone at ML Motorsports.”
