WIR QUARTER-MILE LATE MODELS SET

FOR SEVEN APPEARANCES ON THURSDAYS IN ‘19 (1ST EVENT May 30)

(KAUKAUNA, WI) – Former Wisconsin International Raceway quarter-mile sportsman champion Pete Berken of Appleton is looking to bring those old late model chassis’ collecting dust back to life at WIR on Thursday nights.

Berken is one of the advocates of the WIR ¼ mile late model class. The division is scheduled to compete seven times in 2019 on Thursday nights. The first event is slated for week 2 on May 30.

The division is in it’s fourth season. “In a nutshell our goal is to create an affordable late model class for the quarter-mile,” Berken explained. “We also want to allow it so a young driver can start out with our division on the quarter-mile and then upgrade with the same basic chassis to the late models on the half-mile.”

Berken points to the fact that he didn’t buy one new tire at all during the 2018 season and his car was still a feature winner. “You don’t need those real fancy shocks to run in this class,” Berken said. “The car I’ve got Brandon Reichenberger driving it’s got some of those 20-year-old Carrera shocks.” Berken has cars for sale as turnkey he’d get rid of for $10,000. “And for that price they are race ready too.”

The quarter-mile late models use the same 10 inch tires as the half-mile late models. “We strongly encourage quarter-mile teams to use the half mile drivers run off tires and most do,” Berken said. “Our rules will be similar to the UMA 602 rules package with the cars that run at Dells Raceway Park. They can come by us and we can go by them and run too on select nights. We’ve also got a $200 limit rule for the shocks too.”

On Thursday nights the division runs a pair of 15 lap features. Berken’s cars will serve as “track mules” with special guest drivers climbing behind the wheel from time-to-time. Second-generation racer T.J. Spierowski, who will be home on military leave, is expected to battle his Dad Tom Spierowski this season. “I’ve got cars for sale myself and have leads on many others that are for sale in the Fox Valley area that would be a great fit for this class,” Berken pointed out. Super late model driver Sawyer Effertz will also be in one of the WIR quarter-mile late model cars May 30 racing Berken’s familiar number 04 car.

The nights the division will compete at WIR are Thursday nights May 30, June 6, June 20, July 18, July 25, August 8 and August 15. “Our weekly payout increases we’ve been able to payout is because of the sponsors that we’ve rounded up,” Berken said. “If anyone is interested in sponsoring and getting into it let me know.” Pete’s Auto of Appleton is the title sponsor of the series.
