Driver Interview Dave Coleman #6 Monteith Tire Street Stock Written by: Kelly Grubb June 20, 2009

“I have been around racing since I was a child. My father worked at the racetrack in Warsaw, Indiana.” Dave was fortunate enough to race in the Roadrunner class a few times before Warsaw Speedway closed in 1990 after 41 years of racing action

Dave started racing Mini Stocks 13 years ago, the year after New Paris Speedway started running the Mini Stock class. “These were the days when Mini Stocks were little more than mustangs with a cage” Dave recalls fondly. During Dave’s 10 years in a mini, he won countless A features and 4 championships.

I asked Dave if there were any Mini Stock drivers that he enjoyed driving with the most or any drivers that he missed racing against. “I always enjoyed racing with Jim Anglemyer, who is now in my old car and Kevin Grubb was always great to race against because he made it hard for me to get around him but he always raced me clean. He is a heck of a guy.”

It’s been a few years ago now since Dave was running with the Mini Stocks. Dave has moved on to bigger and better things. I asked Dave why he decided to move up to the Street Stock class and he just smiled and said “It was not planned, it just fell into place”. While Dave has great memories of his Mini Stock days, he is really enjoying his time in his Monteith Tire No. 6 Street Stock. “Street Stocks are more competitive. I mean I have been in the Street Stock for 2 full seasons now and I have yet to win an A feature.” I have no doubt that that first win is in Dave’s near future. Even though that first feature win has eluded him so far, Dave is in it for a championship this year. “It would be a bit of a let down to win the Championship without a win but I will definitely take it.”

When asked what keeps Dave coming back to New Paris Speedway year after year he had to give that a minute of thought. Then with a simple shrug of his shoulders he said, “Besides being close to home, New Paris is one of the hardest track to set up for. Once you are set up for New Paris, other tracks come easily.”

Dave has several inspirations including but not limited to Lou Stremme, Bobby Stremme and Andy Bozell. Dave would like to thank some of his sponsors; Monteith Tire, C&J Racecars, B&M Engines, and Valvoline. Special thanks go out to; Mark Coleman, Kim Coleman, James Brown and Dave Biesmeyer. Also to the New Paris Officials; Donnie Klotz for being a great Promotor, Dave Ingle for many years as head tech inspector, Troy Andrews who is the Race Director and our new announcer who is doing an amazing job; Tony Eldridge. Dave would also like to recognize his boys Cody, Chad and Alex.

Dave’s ultimate goal is to win a championship in all three classes and he plans to race until he either gets bored or just is not competitive anymore. Between Dave’s years of racing experience and the pure talent he has, I have no doubt that Dave will go above and beyond his goals and will continue to become one of New Paris Speedway’s racing legends. Good Luck to Dave Coleman and thanks for always putting on a good show. Happy and Safe Racing!
